Silver Blaze

In the story Silver Blaze, Sherlock Holmes states, “"when it comes to the art of reasoning, many people rely on opinion and unsupported assumptions" meaning that people often rely on their own uneducated assumptions which leads them to believe the wrong idea. Holmes uses this technique to find out who his criminals are by using deductive reasoning to eliminate all other suspects so he can find the actual criminal.  A lot of people often lead themselves to believing an idea based off of their own opinions and beliefs, and I can say I am one of those people sometimes.  When I was getting ready to pick what college I was going to, it was either between U of Arizona or Oregon State.  When I came back from my scouting trips, my dad told me I was going to SJSU or else he wasn’t paying for my college.  I was depressed for weeks and it was only time that taught me SJSU wasn’t as bad as I thought.  I’m getting my education done in SJSU’s prestigious Business program and I have met friends that I will hopefully know for the rest of my life.

  1. I believe you interpreted the wrong point that Sherlock Holmes was trying to get across. He was trying to express that people think with their hearts instead of using their heads. This does not mean that it is uneducated assumption it means that we as humans put emotional aspects on our decisions and assumptions. As Sherlock being a detective, he cannot think normally how most do, he has to go by concrete facts and read peoples tone of voice, facial expressions, etc. to know if what the interviewed person is telling is exactly what happened or if its their opinion and outlook of what did.

  2. I lean toward the side of agreeing with the other persons comment, it does seem that Holmes was trying to say that a person’s emotions and experiences cloud their judgment. Although, I do believe that you come up with an interesting point obviously there is no way to tell who is correct in this situation so I think you have a valid counter argument. The points you make do seem interesting and who knows Holmes may have been egocentric person who thought that he was smarter than everyone else and what he said was just him trying to prove how much more intelligent he was.

  3. Well I am glad you are here at SJSU. I am sorry that it was never your choice because choosing which college to go to is the first step of independence. I am also glad that you noticed that your preconceived opinion was false and negative, but you were able to change and look back and analyze what you went through. Hopefully you can take this experience and apply it to any future situation that you may find yourself dealing with. Just keep an open mind and try not to believe everything you hear, or at least to see it from different point of views.
